NHSBT Given Award for Increased Pollution

The fleet of the National Blood Service was given a 'green' award for using more bio-diesel in its vehicles. Bio-Diesel's role in reducing carbon emissions is dubious at best and there is no disputing that it causes more particulate pollution and smog than conventional Diesel. The increase in cropland being used to grow grains for bio-Diesel is also contributing to increased inflation in Europe and the sharp increases in the price of basic food in developing countries.

Rather than gimmicks, the NBS should seriously consider the road miles travelled by staff. The current management proposals for ACE and closure of centres is set to increase road miles by more than a million.
